I'm so relieved that our brush with fascism under the radical right neocon rule will come to an end.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all.
-- Thomas Jefferson

The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.
-- Joseph Stalin

"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross." - Sinclair Lewis

"Torture, I believe, appeals to the president and the vice president precisely because it's a violation of both law and tradition. . . .
"Only now, five years after 9/11, has Mr. Bush finally found some things he wants us to sacrifice. And those things turn out to be our principles and our self-respect."
--Paul Krugman, in his NYT column today, "King of Pain"

"Liberalism... is the supreme form of generosity; it is the right which the majority concedes to minorities and hence it is the noblest cry that has ever resounded in this planet. It announces the determination to share existence with the enemy; more than that, with an enemy which is weak." ~Jose Ortega Y Gasset

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." ~Theodore Roosevelt, 1918

"Remember, all that Hitler did was legal in Germany at the time." ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

“The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” ~James Madison

"Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of freedoms of the people by gradual and silent encroachment of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." ~James Madison

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar.
-- Julius Caesar

Mudkitty --

I didn't catch that, can you repeat it one more time, please?

(mud)kidding aside --

For once, without reservation, I agree with you.

I've never thought that those who go into harm's way on our behalf are compensated even a fraction of what they should be. These are folks who put it on the line so others may live free, make their fortunes or otherwise live comfortably, safely and well.

Happy Birthday USMC!

Good heavens, mudkitty! Let someone else have a Pops, too!

Ditto - My thanks to your Pops, and my Dad, and uncles who fought long and hard, risking life and limb so that our battles here need only be words on a screen.

And thank you to all the Vets who are now bloggers and commenters who don't wear their service on their sleeves, at least, anymore.

Just one: "Remember, all that Hitler did was legal in Germany at the time." ~Martin Luther King, Jr."

Murder, including killing of Jews, remained illegal. (The defective weren't really human beings, so their deaths don't count.) That's why the the killing centers were outside of Germany for the majority of the war.
