WHAT PRICE APPEASEMENT - THE SUNDAY COMMENTARY

The specter of appeasement once again shows its face as the world contemplates how to respond and what to do with the minor menace of North Korea and its whining insane leader Kim Jung IL. There are many in their irritation over this lunatic who say just, "just give him what he wants and he will go away." Fat chance. There are some who think that just ignoring him will make him go away. Fat chance again. There are some who believe that taking out one or two missile launch pads will end his saber rattling. Not likely. So because of the fact that Jung is not going away and that he cannot just be ignored, giving him what he wants seems to be the way many are leaning. What is it that he wants this time ? Ever since Jung has rattled the nuclear saber there have been six party talks with North Korea which have resulted in absolutely nothing. Why because Jung wants to have one on one talks with The United States. His reason is simply for the recognition that he would receive as a player with the , "big boys, " thus in his mind a prominent world power. The United States has refused and rightfully so. What then has lead this minor world player into thinking that he has the right and the influence to be considered a major player in world politics ? Appeasement. Whenever Jung has in the past rattled the saber using militaristic bribery the world has bent over backwards to give this lunatic what he demands thinking that finally he will be satisfied and go away. South Korea has appeased him so much with money, food and technology because they fear his saber rattling that they are virtually a prisoner to his whims as they have given in time and again. The problem now is that every time this child has been appeased and given what he wants he has become more of a threat and uses his militaristic bribery tactics in a more provocative way each time. In other words he has not gone away which is always the case with appeasement. In the current confrontation the recognition that he has received because of his actions on the Fourth of July has given him a false sense of power as he has dominated world opinion for the last week and looks to be the major subject in the coming week because he still has missiles on the launch pad. Yet still there are many who would give into his demands to shut him up.

Appeasement is dangerous as was proven prior to WWII with the famous agreement that was reached by then British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and Adolph Hitler. Rather than risk the possibility of armed confrontation as Hitler began expanding his Reich into the Sudentenland, Chamberlain met with Hitler as a result of this invasion and signed a supposed peace accord with Germany appeasing Hitler by granting him the invaded areas in exchange for his promise that further expansion and military conflict would not take place. Of course Hitler signed the accord and Chamberlain returned home, "triumphant, " declaring, "My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honor. I believe it is peace for our time." Hitler as we all know never had any intention of honoring the peace accord and used this appeasement to gain the necessary time to build his military into the juggernaut that conquered Europe and plunged the world into WWII.

First let me state that Kim Jung IL is by no means Hitler but rather a spoiled brat who thinks that he is a powerful world leader, when in fact he is truly just a minor player. The problem that arises is this, the more he is appeased, the more that the world gives into his demands especially South Korea the more dangerous he truly becomes. Russia and China because of the large trade that they have with North Korea only complicate the situation since they veto any attempt in the spineless United Nations to solve the problem. The United Nations never solved anything and to think that this weak and corrupt organization can control Kim Jung IL is asking for trouble. By no means though am I suggesting that the way to handle Kim Jung is with military strikes or and invasion or other such means not because I believe that it should not be an option because it should be. This lunatic Kim Jung and his saber rattling does not warrant a military response unless he takes this to the next level and actually threatens his neighbors or the United States with his militaristic ways. I don't see him doing this because he knows the consequences for him and his country if he does. It does not take a genius to realize that he is surrounded by the military might of the United States and any move against his neighbors will be dealt with in a swift and decisive manner. So what then is the answer. First, as President Bush is doing, treat Kim Jung for what he is a whining baby trying to get his way and not over react to him. Second, stop the policy of appeasement as has been the case in the past and never again give into his demands. Thirdly, gather every country willing in a response that does not go through the United Nations and isolate and if necessary starve this lunatic into compliance. Blockade all of his ports not allowing anything to enter North Korea by sea. Use the might of Naval aircraft to turn back planes that attempt to land in his country including stopping all domestic flights of any type thus further isolating him. Freeze all of the countries financial resources that are outside of his borders. Finally leave him alone and watch him wither on the vine. If the world responds as such even the Russians and Chinese will eventually feel the pressure and join the total isolation of North Korea and this small child who has whined his way into the world stage will become a problem of the past as his country collapses.

I shall just say I feel that Il is a lunatic and diplomatic processes will not work with him. Beyond that let me just dwell on one matter, the military side.

You have some interesting ideas that would indeed work. They are the oldest tactics in warfare, surround the castle until they run out of supplies/food. Why that does not work today… you have too many people that will just claim that is as bad as dropping a nuke on them. They will say that in the process you are just killing millions of innocent civvies.

I hate to sound so brutal and harsh, but I’d rather it would be them not us. Sorry.

I think that this should be reason for all to shut up about our missile defense system. “It costs too much.” “It doesn’t work.” Well it is new and it needs to be developed. This is one of the biggest things I don’t understand. Missile defense is something we can build to PROTECT us while never firing a shot or killing any North Koreans. So I am still lost as to why people are dead-set against it. I’ll let you deal with the diplomatic end, me I’d like to have a defense system to protect us from the nut and his missiles.

A friend commented to me last evening about Neal Gabler on Newswatch. He went with the argument that people are against it or something because it doesn’t work. Well the levees in New Orleans didn’t work, they failed. So I guess Neal MUST be against rebuilding them, isn’t that how the logic would go?

I totally agree with the missile defense system and have ever since President Reagan introduced the, "Star Wars, " plan. I also think that North Korea is an ideal opportunity to prove the systems true worth.

I have no objections to a military option concerning Kim Jung. He certainly deserves it. The only problem is that this baby has whined and been given his way in appeasement so much that to wage war though obviously a pretty much cut and dried outcome of victory, would in my opinion be a waste of time, manpower, equipment and arsenal on someone who uses military balckmail as a tool knowing that if he were to actually use that military he would face quick and utter destruction from the military might of the U.S. that is within short distance of his country.

This is why I suggest closing him off from the world and allowing him to whither on the vine because I do not believe that this lunatic actually intends to use what he has in a true military sense only as a means of blackmail. Why waste out power when it is not necessary to achieve the needed outcome? Time is our ally not his. MacArthur used similar tactics in WWII as he island hopped toward the Phillipines isolating Japanese stronghold and allowing them to whither on the vine. It worked then and will work now.

While isolation will cause Kim Jung to whither on the vine , that and the fact that he is miltarially surrounded with U.S. forces in Okinawa, the Japan Sea, the Phillipines and the task force stationed out of Japan. Safddam was a different matter. He had defied the world for more than twelve years and his location was in a far more volital region where an out of control dictator who has ties to terrorism, (which is documented so it is not in denial), the necessity for action was greater and Saddam had proved that sanctions and isolation was not working.

The military option may yet still be needed for Kim Jung if he takes this whining to the next level but for now isolating him should do the trick because he is surrounded where Saddam was not.

Clearly there is going to have to be a diplomatic solution. A U.S. military strike is a long, long, long way off.

China is the key player in this whole mess. They trade with North Korea and have significant influence. Certainly, they are not going to go along with any U.S. military strike, and could do significant damage to us economically if they chose to following a U.S. strike. But it is in their economic interest to diffuse the whole situation.

Japan is the second major player. If they choose to pursue nuclear weapons as a deterrent (there are significant national and international hurdles, but these can be overcome), China is not going to be happy, so again they have significant reason to solve the problem.

There is a minimal direct threat to the U.S., but obviously we need to address this issue. Personally I don't think Bush is going to lead because we don't have much to back up threats given our mess in Iraq. My guess is that there will be a deal struck - brokered by the Chinese - that will diffuse the situation and give North Korea economic incentives to quit their saber rattling.

Just follow the money - its not that hard. Halliburton was in toilet with an operating loss of $112 million and a total net loss of $1 billion in 2002. The stock price was between $15 and $20 dollars making Dick Cheney's 500,000 shares of deferred stock options worthless because they had a strike price of $54/share.

Invade Iraq! Fast forward to today where Halliburton enjoys non-compete contracts in the billions even though they have significant issues with performance. Last year their operating income jumped to $2.6 billion with an overall net profit of $2.4 billion. They have been able to write off huge losses from their past bad moves (thus the difference between operating income and net income) over the last couple of years because of the taxpayer cash they are enjoying. Dick was able to cash in $8 million in stock and the share price is $74. Nice.

Iraq certainly has paid off for some.
